Job Description

Lead maintenance, inspection and test activities which ensure the integrity, reliability and operational availability of Instrumented systems. Provides technical support to refinery operations & maintenance technicians.

Core Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain instrumentation inspection, test and maintenance plans with special emphasis on flow metering and tank gauging systems.
  • Manage the program of meter proving, ensuring quality targets are met and deviation handling processes are implemented.
  • Maintain records of configurable and programmable instrumentation including the maintenance of tank strapping data tables.
  • Maintain Permit to Work nominated person status.
  • Support the maintenance of safety critical instrumented systems including the proof testing of SIS.
  • Support the inspection and maintenance programs for hazardous area electrical equipment, ensuring accurate records, assessment of deficiencies and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Perform daily unit and critical instrument monitoring. Record deviations and events, identify and implement appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
  • Contribute to the development of the Instrument Long Range Plan (LRP), maintenance and capital budgets, ensuring key obsolescence, safety and reliability investment is forecast.
  • Conduct field-based audits and assessments ensuring the competency of staff and contract technicians, driving competency and ensuring safety standards are maintained.
  • Conduct investigations into incidents, events and failures promoting continuous improvement within discipline.  
  • Support the development of company standards, best practices and asset integrity and reliability behaviours across the refinery.
  • Assists in the development of Instrument turnaround (TA/SUS) scope, consistent with long term strategies, to ensure run length targets can be met and sustained.
  • Troubleshoot Instrument problems and engage other technical resources as needed to support operations and maintenance technicians.
  • Provide information, competency assessment and training development, and functional guidance to central engineering, project groups, specialists and supervisors.
  • Initiate and review relevant discipline management of change documents.
  • Provide specialist support for all assigned projects through relevant lifecycle phases including commissioning and start-up.

Core Skills/Education Requirements

  • Apprentice trained Instrumentation Technician or Engineer with extensive experience with fiscal metering and tank gauging systems.  
  • Awareness of the SIS Functional Safety Lifecycle with experience in the operations, maintenance and modification phases.
  • Aware of hazardous area classification, protection concepts and inspection techniques typically used in instrumentation. Compex 1-4 and 14 knowledge preferable.  
  • Knowledge of Instrument reliability, engineering and maintenance procedures, processes and activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with all employees and contractors.
  • Balances short-term and long-term tasks with the ability to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully influence other departments outside area of control.
  • Membership of a relevant PEI is desirable with a commitment towards professional development.

As a part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, the Humber Refinery is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. With proposed plans for a number of projects including to implement a first-of-a-kind FCC carbon capture project, the Humber Refinery is part of Humber Zero, a world-scale concept to reduce UK industry carbon emissions, saving up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 from the Immingham industrial area.

On top of this, the Humber Refinery is the UK’s only refiner producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel at scale. It is also the only European facility producing battery anode coke, which forms a critical component for lithium-ion batteries used in electrical vehicles and in consumer electronics. Our current production of battery anode coke is equivalent to placing 1.3 million EVs on the road every year, and we are developing multiple projects to expand this capability.
