Job Description

The Shift Field Leader will supervise the operating area to ensure that the units/area and the Operators are available to support optimum operations.

Core Responsibilities

• Responsible for a team of Operators and Shift Contractors to achieve safe and reliable operation of area equipment.

• Ensure production of products is maximised to available feedstocks.

• Responsible that finished products remain within quality parameters, ensuring process moves as required to remain in spec.

• Identify and help implement plant improvement ideas.

• Accountable for safe operation of plant.

• Accountable for the safety/environmental actions of their Operators.

• Startup and shutdown of units following procedures.

• Appraisal/coaching of area shift Operators.

• Accountable for the safe preparation of plant equipment and operating areas under the PTW system.

• Ensures their own and Operators periodic environmental/safety audits/checks are completed by due date.

• Accountable for the training and competence of assigned Operators and Process Technicians.

• Respond to unit emergencies acting as key planner for E.R.T.

• Ensure thorough and smooth shift turnover.

• Plan and carry out minor maintenance on area equipment, following scheduled maintenance priority guidelines and prepare area equipment in a timely manner.

• Audit and optimise energy conservation, chemical and other material use to minimise waste.

• Ensure Refinery Safety/Environmental Manuals and GSI’s are understood and followed.

• Review procedures including Area Manuals, suggest and implement changes if required, using the script amendment programme.

• Provide input to design of projects / modifications.

• Responsible for the timely implementation of operating orders and instructions.

• Follows procedures and takes full ownership of actions of Operators.

• Provide relief for Process Technicians.

• Plan and supervise turnarounds as required.

• Complete the long and short term staffing schedules, including training.

• Maintaining the accuracy of the C-Notes system and ensuring aims are met and SOL/ROL/EOL limits not exceeded.

• Respond to operation reliability initiatives.

• Maintain clear communication channels through all levels.

Education Requirements/Key Skills

• Experienced Operator with full knowledge of area plant/equipment and safety/environmental procedures.

• Already completed and passed out of the Process Technician/Field Leader training.

• Act as mentor and set the standard for shift team.

• Sets high standards for performance in all aspects of the job and is accountable for the results of the team.

• Represents a balanced view between the needs of the company and the needs of the employee.

• Act in the best interests of the refinery even if in conflict with shift or area priorities. Shares best practices with others and encourages their team to do the same.

• Positive attitude that motivates their team and encourages their development.

• Understands when to make a decision and when to consult first with others.

• Orientated towards continuous improvement / learning.

• Accepts ownership of the area, is accountable and delivers on commitments.

• Demonstrate positive support for Refinery supervision / management teams.

• Behavioural role model for area shift operators.

• Build teamwork within area/shift teams.

The Humber Refinery is playing its part of the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.

As a part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, the Humber Refinery is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. With proposed plans for a number of projects including to implement a first-of-a-kind FCC carbon capture project, the Humber Refinery is part of Humber Zero, a world-scale concept to reduce UK industry carbon emissions, saving up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 from the Immingham industrial area.

On top of this, the Humber Refinery is the UK’s only refiner producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel at scale. It is also the only European facility producing battery anode coke, which forms a critical component for lithium-ion batteries used in electrical vehicles and in consumer electronics. Our current production of battery anode coke is equivalent to placing 1.3 million EVs on the road every year, and we are developing multiple projects to expand this capability.
